The pair teamed up with Stewart at the suggestion of Mercury Managing Director Howard Berman, who had initially signed the girls sight unseen after hearing a demo tape. It took the girls nine years to get the Mercury deal.

"We've done some terrible stuff in the past," admits Karen. "But now we've gone through all that, we've got to the stage where we're confident enough to do what we want to do, the way we want to. We're proud of the music we're making now. It feels right."

Karen says: "When you work with Dave Stewart because he's such a big star; this big genius, you know, you suddenly just become... friends; not friends, but part of the scene with all of these like really huge stars, and me and Shell are like, "Oh no - we're not worthy, what are we doin' here?"... and we met Mick Jagger, Bowie, we met all these people we've never dreamed of meeting!"

Karen also said the group's pairing with Stewart was the perfect fit.

"At first, I thought it might be intimidating to work with him," she said, "but he was fascinating. As soon as we met him, he said, 'I love what you do. I don't want to ruin it or take away from what it already is.' He said he just wanted to take some magic fairy dust and spread it around, so that's why we got on so well as people. On a personal level, he's a really good bloke."

The album went on to sell 400,000 copies in the UK (plus 100,000 in Japan) and spawned four Top 20 singles.
