Great little site for a great band.
I remember dancing to this in a club, every Monday for months back in '95.
I've been looking the mix that the DJ played ever since.
It's not the 3am dance version.
Anyone with any info PLEASE email me. Thanks.

It took me so long to find the video of ILS at youtube. I finally managed to save it in my favourites. It is the only song I know from the duet nevertheless one of the most impressive according to my taste. Brilliant voice, and the radical change of rythm from the first lines to chorus really made me love this song! Unfortunatelly, no band's material is availiable in shops since their music never considered to be commercial and I guess this is the reason why they broke up so early. Cheers to all!

Well I don't check in here for a while, and what do I find? Not only has Jo popped out of the woodwork (great to see you!) but someone else posts a link to Cheryl's myspace page (thanks Dean!). I will drop her a line shortly.

It's good to see Scarlet so well remembered in so many places. Good music never dies. Play on ....

I came across this website sometime ago and was amazed and quite honestly a bit freaked out seeing people chatting about me and wondering what i'm up to.I've finally plucked up the courage to send in a reply. For those of you still living in Hull you can see me in a production at Hull Truck Theatre next week 14th to 18th November. It 's an Alan Ayckborn comedy called Comic Potential and i play the lead female role Jacie Triplethree a lifelike humanoid actor! I am not currently involved in any music projects at present but am enjoying my return to the stage, drama was one of my first interests as a child when i took part in drama festivals alongside our very famous Debra Stephenson starring now in Coronation St no less! Hope this satisfies your curiosity. Bye for now Jo x

I was loading all my old music into my iPod and found my copy of the "Shine on me now" single. In the early '90s a couple of New Zealand friends of mine (Laurence Malofie and Murray Wright) were living in a house in West Hampstead, London and they had 3 girls "dossing" with them - basically crashing on the floor of their flat. The 3 girls were Scarlet. They had moved from Hull and needed a place to crash in London while they were trying to get a recording deal. I have lots of memories of coming home from the local pub and sitting around while the girls jammed away. When they released the single I was given one of the copies. I remember seeing them a few years later but have no idea where they are now. Good memories.

Hello to all Scarlet Fans. I just have to say CONGRATULATIONS to Caroline for building this impressive/awesome site and the others that have helped her.
I turn into a Scarlet fan about year 2000. Of course, all began with Independent Love Song... and continued to Moonstruck and Love Hangover (thanks to Napster!!). Great HITs all of them. And I was looking for the album(s). I didn't know how many they made. In my local stores there will be nothing... But, with the help of internet, finally could buy the two CDs that are fabulous.
I really dont know why Scarlet is not so famose. They are really GOOD.
Its a shame that there isnt a 3er album or more.

I would like to get music sheets about their songs to play on my piano. Anyone knows where can I get them? Feel free to email me to scarlet[at]gustavospadari.com.ar
The only song that I have the partiture is Independent Love Song.

Well. Sorry for my english (I speak spanish).
Congratulations again!.

I watched "Bed of Roses" on TV today and suddenly remembered that divinely beautiful song I was listening on headphones under my pillow back in 1996, when I was a teen.
It's one of the best and most intense songs I have ever heard and it doesn't seem to age. Greetings to all Scarlet fans from Latvia!

Hi there. Just thought you'd like a bit of trivia. "Shine", from the first album, was originally recorded at the Chrysalis studio in London as a simple demo and didn't feature Jo Youle at all! I co-wrote the song with Cheryl (It was originally called 'Slip Inside', I won't go into too much detail, but we were drunk and the lyrics were fairly explicit!) and recorded the backing trck while the girls were away promoting "Piccadilly In The Rain", their first single, Cheryl and Jo Fox then recorded the vocals. Chrysalis liked it so much they immediately decided to release it as a single on Haven so a piano part was later added for Jo Youle to have something to mime to on the video! In fact, I've still got a VHS copy of the promo video somewhere as well as the original demo with no piano. In fact, I've got a few early pre-Warners demos kicking around. At some point I'll get round to digitising it and I'll forward a copy.

Cheers
Nick

I remember hearing Scarlet for the first time while watching Bed of Roses with my wife and felt chills just go up and down my spine. I have looked for their music ever since and have been unable to find it in the states because we have a band Scarlet who play hardcore rock and all searches end up with them. I am so happy I found this site.

I re-discovered Scarlet while spending a year in the UK where they still play them on the radio! It was fantastic (although somewhat distracting) to hear the absolute mesmerizing intensity of ''Independant Love Song'' played in the office. It is extremely difficult to find anything on Scarlet these days, although I did find Cheryl Parker's name listed as a writer on the Chrysalis music website. I think its fantastic that you're dedicating a website to this amazing band. I only wish the girls would grace us with an update on themselves! Keep it up!

Thank you for the web site and excuse me for my message in italian language. W Scarlet!

I used to work with Scarlet in the late eighties (when they were called Cheap Day Return) and early nineties and co-wrote a number of songs with them, including Shine On Me Now, so hello to Atsuo Uehara in Japan, I'm glad you liked it. And to Jane in the UK, where is Jo Fox? I've had a few drunken sessions in the pub with her over the years but last saw her about 7 or so years ago in Bond Street car park in Hull getting a very small baby out of her car.

I`ve been a massive fan of Scarlet for years and its great to find a site dedicated to joe and cheryl. I bought Naked about 8 years ago an every track is worthy of a single, awesome lyrics about relationships, feelings emotions.Chemistry, not as "pop" but as good as Naked and grows on you. A great band and a great secret if you`ve discovered them, spread the word "shout it from the roof tops"

Hi Dean (and everyone else kind enough to leave messages). The iTunes thing is only for the UK site, though. I think you can shop in the UK iTunes store if you're abroad but you have to register separately, you can't use your regular iTunes login if you're in the USA. The US has a band named Scarlet that isn't our girls! Glad you were able to replace Naked electronically, anyway. Is Chemistry on iTunes? It's seems that's the harder to find of the two albums.

I got the early pictures, one from the inlay of "Piccadilly in the Rain" and the other I found a long, long time ago online when I started searching for Scarlet on the web. It's so long ago I don't remember the source, or I would certainly credit them.

Thanks to all my lovely visitors ... Caroline xoxox

Brilliant site!! Where did you find the older pics? I first heard Independent Love Song on Top of the Pops in 1995. I was so impressed I brought the single and then the Album. Trouble is I have now lost my copy of Naked. However, I recently downloaded from iTunes music store - so if you've got an iPod why not give it a go.

Scarlet was one of my partners favorite bands, she always used to have "Naked" playing. Never really paid any attention to it - always considered it just another female duo. She died in 2002 and it was played at her funeral. I will never know the band but I still want to thank them for giving her something that she loved.

I am a MASSIVE scarlet fan. I am fortunate enough to have found all the cd singles and both albums from ebay, and the haven records website. I have converted all my friends to Scarlet fans! It saddens me that so few people have heard of Scarlet, and that there music has not got the recognition it deserves. And what a waste of a fabulous band! They should have had a much longer career, their songs are absolutely amazing. It also saddens me to see such a lack of information about them on the web, which is why I was so happy when I found this site just now. I wish, at the very least, they would get back together for one gig, just to sing their amazing songs. I would definitely go!!! :)

Great to see a Scarlet website. Just rediscovered them again after managing (at long last) to buy the Chemistry cd from a record shop in Germany. Always wanted to know 1. Why Joanne left the group and 2. Why they were dropped from their label. Just one single from the Chemistry album!! Anyway, at least they gave us two great albums! Wow! A [relatively] new website about a great, and sadly missed band. I'm currently listening to Radio 2 and Janice Long played a track by some new band I'd never heard of and it reminded me of Scarlet. It had been a while since I'd searched for info on what has happened to them since “Chemistry”, so I was shocked to find this website, as you can tell by the “Wow!” with which I opened this comment.

There's a lot of new [to me] information here, so it’s been interesting to find out about both before as well as after. I’m still looking for a copy of the “Love Hangover” single that contains a version with strings. This wasn’t included on the “Naked” album, despite it being the version that was played on radio stations at the time.

Anyway, thanks for a great site. Keep up the good work.

A few notes for you disc hunters:

I found a copy of Naked in the Virgin Mega Store in Glasgow in 2002, their only copy.

We had an Andy’s records store here in Worcester where I bought Chemistry in a sale. They had two more copies, and there were more in their Hereford store. Unfortunately, they went bust in 2003.
